I jumped on an internet rail sale fair of 49 dollars each way. This ought to be a great trip, but I have not gone overnight in a superliner coach in forever. Anyone know how the foodservice is? When does the freight come off the back end?

Well, theres just the obvious to those who travel frequently, such as yourself. No meals included in the diner, however, you can pay for meals, and the Sightseer Lounge for other food (Snacks and Meals).

Steve,

I haven't heard that a date has yet been set for the termination of freight services. I suspect that it will be a gradual phase out though, since I'm sure that Amtrak has different length contracts.

Thanks for the info. On the Trains magazine website discussion list, one guy made reference to the standardized menus and stated that it was all microwave now. I doubt that this is true. However, how is the food out there on the road?

I intend to eat three square a day in the diner, and walk through the sleeper and hijack some cookies like somebody we know. :D

Steve4031, I was in a Zephyr sleeper last month and there wasn't a cookie to be found all the way to Emeryville. :( Maybe you'll get lucky!!

Of course, you can still buy packaged cookies in the lounge cafe. I think they're Pepperidge Farms or something like that but they're still pretty good. I'm a sucker for just about any chocolate chip cookie (and have been known to eat Chips Ahoy bags at a time) so these were fine with me!
