Caltrain riders are not on board with the agency's proposals to halt trains on weekends and eliminate service south of San Jose. In fact, they have ideas to boost Caltrain service, and more than a few are fine with paying higher fares.

In the weeks since the commuter railroad solicited comments from riders on service-cut and fare-increase proposals designed to close a $2.3 million deficit, the response from many of the agency's 35,000 daily riders has been passionate.

With six weeks of outreach left, more than 350 people have e-mailed comments to the agency, and more than 200 riders attended community meetings held in four cities Thursday.

Of the people who have e-mailed comments to the agency, the most said not to eliminate Gilroy and weekend service, agency officials said. The theme proved consistent at the community meetings, they said.

Meanwhile, among those who submitted comments on the fare increase, twice as many said they would be OK with raising fares compared to those who were against it, officials said.
