Right now I don't have a travel companion for a trip I am planning in May. It would be two two-zone roomette or bedroom awards.

If I make the AGR reservation now for myself, can I add one more person later? I know there would be no additional cost.

ALSO, in case I have to cancel for any unforseen reason, what is the policy? Will I get all of the points put back into my account (assuming I don't print the tickets)?

Thanks.

The answer to both is yes. I made a reservation with an AGR award last year and later added someone with no problem. And even though I've never cancelled an AGR award trip, I know others have and gotten their points added back in with no problems.

What if tickets are printed ?

If the tickets were printed, you need to mail the original tickets back to AGR - but all the points will be redeposited to your account. However, between mailing and processing time, it may take like 2-3 weeks! If the tickets were not printed, all you have to do is call AGR, and the points will be back many times before you hang up!

And as said, the other answer is yes!

One word of caution though for anyone mailing tickets back, and yes I know that AAARGH isn't doing that, but for anyone who is; always send your tickets back via certified return receipt requested mail or via some form of Fedex or UPS next day/2 day letter. It doesn't happen often, but there are instances of tickets being lost. Without you having some form of proof that Amtrak/AGR got that letter, you will be out the points/money.

So again, without regard to whether you have paid tickets or AGR tickets, if you mail them back for some form of refund, do it certified return receipt requested.

Exactly Alan.

Tickets are effectively money you can spend on Amtrak. You wouldn't (or shouldn't, at least) mail around cash or checks without certified/registered/insured mail.

Thanks for the replies.

This means that I have no reason not to make a reservation now. I can get a refund if I can't go or add someone once I find someone who wants to go with me.
