My first day in Budapest, the weather was sunny and crisp, blue sky. I enjoyed a good walk, and several tram rides. I bought a 7 day tourist pass for Metro and trams, so feel obliged to clock up a few miles!
Yesterday was Saturday, and I set out with the intention of visiting Memento statue park, a collection of soviet era items. However it began snowing, and I noticed a “Children’s railway” on my map, so caught a tram and found it was up and running.
I bought a return ticket, and had an enjoyable ride on the narrow gauge up into the hills. My train had a diesel loco, but there was a steam hauled service too, nice to see the steam in the cold air.
I met a local couple who cracked open a bottle of Chivas Regal, and took a few tots to combat the cold weather. They taught me to say “cheers” in Hungarian, but I soon forgot my lesson!
The children do take their work seriously, and with the track being 11km long, it is not a toy.
