Sadly, no great surprises there!

When I worked for British Rail, many moons ago, the whole network was "one company". We often worked at night during the week, and on Sundays, to replace and maintain the tracks, etc.

The current set up means that the rails are repaired by different companies to those who run the trains, with different priorities. It may be that major works have to be fitted in when the trains are less busy, as over the holiday period. I would never advise anyone to expect a smooth train service over any holiday period, due to track works.

Again, with a broken down train blocking the tracks... passenger train operating companies now don't have spare diesel loco's anywhere to assist in prompt recovery. Back in the day, as a united entity, B.R. had rostered emergency spare Loco crews at each depot to keep the job running as best we could.

I am glad I worked there then, it was like one big family, lifetimes of rail experience, all pulling together. Happy times!
