clean or ?

I will be taking the Sunset Limited to Fla. from San Antonio and will

ride coach. I just read a post on toilet cleanliness. What can I expect?

Hi Boyce,

Just finished a trip on the Empire Builder. Last year took five different segments around the country, though not on Sunset. My experience is that they are usually clean enough (not great on the last day) though the problem may be odors. On the Empire Builder, the car attendant told me about a longstanding problem they've had for months with two particular cars. He dumped something in the toilet every now and then to help the problem. But, he was an attendant who obviously cared, too. Some don't. The trains had the paper covers, so that helps. You might want to take a can of disinfectant spray if it really bothers you.

I've ridden on MUCH worse in the former East Bloc countries

As a note: The Canadian, probably the best train I've ever ridden on, has clean bathrooms. They keep one of the cans of spray in each restroom. Let's hope that Amtrak is about to get some real capital via the four US senators and thier new bill.

Canada does not require retention toilets I believe, so all the waste is dumped onto the track. Thus, avoiding smelly restrooms.
