Anybody have any idea if it works to purchase a coach ticket to a zone boundary, then move to a reserved AGR sleeper? Can you move through the train, or do you have to detrain and re-board? The zone boundary would be WPT Westbound....

Sure will ... and I would make sure to let the crew know in advance, maybe they might get you a move earlier than your upgrade point. Otherwise, just take you stuff and walk on over.

I've done this... it does work. As mentioned, let staff know... maybe you can meet the sleeping car attendant early...

Although not quite the same, a. Few months ago I moved from a Roomette on 28 to a Roomette on 8, officially at WPT. After speaking to the SCA on 28 and her conferring with the SCA on 8 and the conductor, I was allowed to move outside on the platform at Havre!

I do this a lot. As to whether or not you'll need to detrain and reboard depends upon whether or not the dining car is in full operation mode. The staff kinda frowns having bags carried through while they're trying to deliver meals to tables. Also when going the other way from sleeper to coach I've always had to detrain and reboard. It seems a little degrading to have to leave a sleeper and stand out with the masses to reboard. :giggle: But yeah, coming back from my western trip this fall I'll be leaving my roomette at Cincinnati and moving to coach to HUN.

Do this all the time. Out bound no time to talk the the SCA upon boarding. I only travel about 100 miles in coach to the zone border. Then change to the sleeper. Coming back home a lot of the time I am able to stay in the sleeper to my home stop, if its not booked at my home stop. A nice talk with the SCA when I frist board in CHI. Just to see how it may be posable to stay all the way to my home station stop. Most of the time the SCA will talk to the conductor to clear it. Some times the conductor will say no, thinking you just want a freeby. Still no big deal to hop back in coach for 100 miles.

If it does happen the SCA get a nice tip.

As stated, yes you can do this. We do it all the time between Cleveland and Toledo--coach to sleeper on the Cap Ltd. :p
Yes, Bill, I remember when we were going to the AU Gathering in St. Louis. Before traveling, you told me

that you would be in roomette #6, but you didn't tell me that you would not be there until Toledo. As I was

going to breakfast (before Toledo), I came by roomette #6 and pounded on the door. I surprized the young

lady inside as well as myself only to find that Bill & Claudia were not in there!!!

After departing Toledo, Bill came in the diner and explained he had just moved into roomette #6!!

Yes it does work. As stated above , you may have to wait until the previous tenants leave. we took ROC to Grand Junction. Coach to Toledo and told the attnedant our ticket details. She said it was occupied now but if we wanted, she would wake us to get the roommette in Toledo. We said yes, and from there on our meals were included and we were happy to take advantage of the Metro lounge in Chicago too.
