Okay I am playing around with rates for next July. This is 321 or 21 Lake Sohore Limited. When I put it in, it gives me the choice of twoor I am assuming one train. Same times. One says Viewliner Roommette and the other says Superliner Roommette. One is a hundred dollars cheaper. What is with this?

If you're traveling on a part of the route where 49 and 449 both serve, you'll see two "trains" with two different prices, but there's no way that one of them is a Superliner.

What dates and stations?

The Lake Shore Limited comes from Chicago and splits into two trains at Albany; one goes to Boston and one goes to New York. They both have Viewliner Sleepers. The Viewliner Roomettes on the "Boston section" are priced separately from the Viewliner Roomettes on the "New York" section. Each of them has the price go up as people reserve more rooms.

So if you're travelling strictly west of Albany (for instance: Syracuse to Chicago) you'll see both of them, at different prices. If lots of people are travelling to New York, space will be cheaper in the Boston section; if lots of people are travelling to Boston, space will be chepaer in the New York section.

Generally, take whichever one is cheaper; they're basically the same. The exception is if you have mobility impairments (use a cane or something like that). The New York sleepers are right next to the dining car; the Boston sleeper is all the way at the other end of the train, twelve cars away.

This would be Boston to Chicago in July.
Boston to Chicago?

You should see only one direct option, train "449".

I tried it and I see what's going on.

Option (1) is to have the same room the whole way (train 449). This is the one you want, normally.

Option (2) is to change rooms in Albany (train 449 to Albany, then train 49 to Chicago).

Sometimes the Boston sleeper is full west of Albany, but has spaces east of Albany, and the New York sleeper is full south of Albany but has spaces west of Albany. That's the only reason you'd normally consider doing this.

Train "449" runs from Boston to Albany to Chicago. Train "49" runs from New York to Albany to Chicago. West of Albany, they're hooked together and actually are the same train. Got it?

Nathanael,

Just wondering if you've ever given any thought to signing up as an actual member here? We'd love to have you as a member! :)

It would make your life easier, as you wouldn't have to keep entering codes for every post and your posts would appear immediately as they would not need moderator approval. This would stop people from posting things that might have already been answered by your hidden post. There are other small perks too, like being able to edit your posts for mistakes and/or additions.

And I won't deny that it would make things a bit easier for the staff who already have to wade through a ton of spam posts to sift out the good guest posts, including yours.

(a) I tend not to be a "joiner", and have gotten kicked off too many boards I've joined (I have... shall we say... strong opinions)

(b) I will not under any circumstances supply my actual birthday, which is the deciding factor here.

Also, I know nobody else ever reads terms and conditions, but I absolutely do not agree to the terms and conditions required for registration: I most certainly will post fair-use selections from copyrighted material to which I do not hold the copyright.

So, y'know, I'm happy to help simplify the life of the board administrators as soon as they change the registration process to meet my exacting legal standards. If you want to cover your ass legally as much as you appear to be doing, you'll be stuck with moderating my posts. It's a tradeoff.

I once stopped ordering from a company where I used to order about $1000 of merchandise a year because they had a **** "terms and conditions" on their website. I know most people don't take those things seriously, but I do.

First, I respect that and I am sorry that has happened to you.

But you've been around here long enough now to know that many people here have very strong opinions, some of which are often not popular. You might get your posted edited, and in fact I've already done so to one of your posts. So that can happen no matter what.

But in 10 years I can still count on my one hand the number of people who've been kicked off this BB by either myself or Anthony. Yes, there have been some who've chosen to leave on their own because they didn't like getting told something or having a post edited. But that was their choice; not ours.

(b) I will not under any circumstances supply my actual birthday, which is the deciding factor here.
That's not a requirement here. Yes, one can fill in a date if one wishes, but it's not required. Some people filled out nothing, some only month & day, some everything. And heck, for all I know, some people may have even made up a birthday.

No pressure is intended here, just thinking that it could be good all around. I should have offered this in the first place, but should you have any further thoughts, questions, or just wish to discuss things further off the board you can contact me privately simply by emailing me and putting my handle in front of amtraktrains.com.

And they will be consistently edited out of your posts, without regard to guest status or member status. Sorry!

Wait, I thought that was the whole point of "fair use"? That's what the announcement topic says (that excerpts for fair use ARE allowed). Do the terms and conditions say differently?

Edit: so I finally found the terms and conditions. Had to sign out and start to pretend to make a new account to find them (if that the only way to see them, that should be fixed, they should be available for review). They do say:

You agree not to post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or by this bulletin board.
Seems to me a common sense addition would be a statement such as "in it's entirety" should be added after "copyrighted material" in the above, then a second sentence saying something to the effect of "Quoting a portion of a copyrighted article with attribution is considered "fair use" and is permissible."

This would satisfy Nathanael's concern and make the T&C's actually match the policy as enforced.

To further elaborate on what Alan said regarding birthdays, it is not a requirement and some do make up dates. I do the posting on the birthday (Aloha) greetings thread. A couple of years ago, someone listed their birthday as "January 1, 1910". While it is possible that they were 100 years old, I personally think that was a made up date!

If there is a year listed, I put the age in the post. If there is no age listed, I put (??) in place of the age.

I also urge you to consider joining AU!

Sorry to "derail" the thread, Gingee, but we have no other way of communicating with Nathanael and we have seized the opportunity.

With respect to the terms and conditions, please know that they are generic verbiage supplied by the software developers of the discussion forum software. While we leave them there because they sound good and probably help cover things legally, they are not hard and fast policy statements by the owner, administrators or moderators of this forum. We actually have few such rules, which can be found in the pinned topics or in the Announcements section. I hope this eases your concerns. And, as stated, no birthday is required! If you find that you cannot get past the signup screen without supplying one, feel free to submit a fake one.

Anthony
