After Amtrak derailment Sunday, Metra schedule back on track

Metra train schedules were back on track Sunday afternoon after a morning derailment of an Amtrak train on the Near South Side.

No one was injured, authorities said. The train was heading to Union Station when, at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, the wheels of the locomotive “lost contact with the track,” around 18th Street, between Clark and Canal streets - near a CSX lift bridge, Amtrak spokeswoman Christina Leeds said. The train remained upright, she said.

Amtrak train No. 58, the City of New Orleans train between New Orleans and Chicago, left New Orleans on Saturday, Leeds said.

There were 197 passengers on board at the time of the derailment, and passengers were transferred to shuttle buses, which brought them to Union Station, she said.

:hi: Thanks Charlie! "Splains why yesterdays #21 left CHI 2 and 1/2 Hours Late and is still Running 2 and 1/2 Down in East Texas! At least it wasnt Bad as the Derailment in Conn., :( Imagine Union Station with a Mess like that!!!

No danger of screwing up Union Station where the derailment occurred, which I would imagine from the location given was the St. Charles Air Line. That makes sense, as only the CONO and Illini/Saluki use the SCAL.

The Metra delays mentioned in the headline were on the Rock Island service into LaSalle St. Station. If one google-maps 16th St. & Clark St. (yes, 16th rather than 18th as the article states) and focuses in enough, one sees a Metra-Rock Island train "captured" crossing the SCAL tracks.

Right, the CONO was blocking the Rock Island District's entrance to LaSalle St. station. It wasn't near any Union Station trackage. And it was a Sunday morning, so not that many Metra riders were affected.
