The day finally arrived for us to board the Crescent going to Philly-then taking the Keystone from there on in to Hummelstown,Pa to see my daughter. With a twinge of excitement and kinda scared we left Baton Rouge,La early to get to the train station in NO. People here on the board really prepared me for my journey and I do thank everyone for the input.
We got to the station,got our tickets and was directed to the Magnolia room which was a bit more comfortable than just sitting in the waiting room, although I would have been okay sitting there also. People were pleasant,employees very nice. We checked our luggage and sat for about 30 minutes. The attendant came and got us from the Magnolia room and we were allowed to board first. I felt kinda bad as there was a long line for the other passengers. My daughter-who is disabled-and I were loaded onto a cart with another lady and driven to our car. Bedroom sleeper H in car 2011. As we boarded our attendant Tina helped us on. Man that room is a very nice size,the bathroom was really nice.
Tina came around and showed us everything,attended to our every need and when I felt closed in as we approached a stop would get me off the train and let me walk. I didn't have that feeling often. Room very spacious. Food was good. I had the steak and it was good. Food was included in the cost of sleeper and they gave you enough and anything you wanted. I did remember to tip.We had a problem with our engine and had to change it out. Tina made our bed and my daughter and I were able to sleep on the bottom bunk together. The bed was pretty comfortable. I slept all night.
That night I had gone down to the lounge car and there were so many nice people there. We all laughed and talked until late into the night. We exchanged views on schools,politics,everything. We were late pulling into Washington,where we changed engines again and we started moving pretty swiftly and quick down the rails. I thought I would miss my connecting train,but Tina arranged a wheelchair,redcap and everything we needed to meet us at the train and we were off,they picked up our luggage,checked our luggage and we were on our way to Hummelstown.
We returned 15 days later and I knew I couldn't ride coach. So i snagged the last sleeper coming back on the Crescent 19-Sleeper Bedroom A(can't remember what car,but we were right next to the diner). The lady in the diner was the same lady that we had going and she remembered us. We had an attendant in training(Damian) and he was awesome. He attended to all our needs and was very friendly. If he stays like he is,he'll be a good Amtrak employee. The employee training him was also very pleasant and nice. We stayed mostly in our bedroom this time and I though I would have problems riding backwards all the way from Philly to NO. But I actually liked it. The food was good as usual and I was very pleased.
Don't know if I'll do another overnight soon,but I will do it again. Looked at the roomette and if I were alone I might try it. But with a bedroom you can see out of both sides of the train,if you keep your door and window open.and its not a lot of traffic going past. The bathroom in the A bedroom was kinda tight for my daughter,but the good thing was we didn't have to share it with anyone. We slept well and was able to share the bottom bunk again. We took our own blankets,didn't want to get cold in the night and we used them. The Amtrak blankets were kinda thin.I loved my journey to Pa. and back an the Amtrak Crescent 20 and 19.
