Hi everyone!

I am going to New Orleans for work in early December for a conference. I am thinking of taking the Crescent out of NYP instead of flying (my knee and I are still not ready to do the stairs on and off the plane without assistance.) In looking at the recent posts about the Crescent, it would appear that it runs on time, but I wondered if I could trust that the equipment for the H accessible room would still be like the ones on the Viewliners versus the accessible rooms on the Superliner.

Has anyone heard/read any news if the equipment would change for some reason in December *and* any guess how far the dining car would be from the sleepers?

Thanks!

The Crescent ALWAYS uses single level cars - so it will be a Viewliner. And the sleepers are ALWAYS near the Diner. There is a 50/50 chance that your H room will be next to Diner. (Right across the vestibule!) And even if it's not, you could always ask your SCA to bring your meals to your room!

Recently they moved the sleepers to the end of the train, sometimes this makes the ride a bit jerky.

I feel the H room on the viewliner is a little better than the superliner. Hope you have a nice trip.

Thanks for the information. I know they can bring the meals and I have been lucky to have some great and thoughtful attendants. I just didn't know if the set-up was like the LSL from Boston where the sleepers and the diner car are a billion miles apart! Earlier this week, I rode the LSL from Cleveland to Boston and the H room was the last car on the train right next to the baggage car. The good thing about this that the attendant put our bags in the baggage car so that gave a bit more room in our car especially when the lower bed was out. The bad part is that we were forever losing power and the heating was on and off. This is why I pack like a Girl Scout and wear layers.

I just need to talk my husband into riding on the train for 30 hours+ when we could fly to New Orleans in about 10 hours, including the layovers, cab rides to Logan, etc.

If your lucky, it may be like the Cardinal - which has 1 sleeper, and the H-room is usually right next to the Diner-lite. But the Crescent may have 2 sleepers, so it's 50/50. (One car could be reversed.)

Just an added thought to the correct info you have already been given. The Crescent and other trains out of NYC are single level due to tunnel clearances in the Northeast.

The reason you were so far from the diner on the LSL is because you were in the Boston section and the bulk of the train is going to New York.

Hi Again. I have another question.

My mom is thinking of joining us on this train trip, but getting on the Crescent in Washington instead of NYC like we will. What is the likelihood that she would be in the same sleeper car or close to ours?

Thanks!

It only has two sleepers and they are next to each other so you will be no be further away than the next car.

If you make your mom's reservation by phone after you make your reservation (so you know your car number) or at the same time, the clerk can make sure you are both in the same car. I did this once on the CS when I wanted two roomettes downstairs and across the hall from each other for my mom (who has to be watched on account of dementia, and using a walker at the time) and me (using wheelchair).
