There does not seem to be a way to enter past trips on discontinued routes. I traveled from L.A. to Las Vegas years ago on the Desert Wind (I believe) and can't enter it.

Yes, release of the application was higher on the list than completion of discontinued routes, as the old MileTrak program was so poor. The new app has a few bugs here and there but fundamentally it's much more powerful. The first two routes I'll add from the discontinued pool will be the Desert Wind and Pioneer.

Could you just allow optional manual entries of the information or would it mess up standardization such as misspellings and mileage errors?

That's correct. Plus, routes are not stored within each user profile by route name, but rather, a system-wide route ID. So essentially I'd have to allow modification of the entire route database by all users so they could define their own routes, and that could prove catastrophic for the reasons you mentioned.

Aloha

I was unable to enter several trips, most discontinued. When will they be added.

Desert Wind

Broadway Limited

There are 2 routes not listed however I beleive they are current

San Diegan

Talgo to Vancouver BC from Seattle

GG-1, I think the problem you're having with the "San Diegan" is it's probably listed under "Pacific Surfliner" the Name the route received when it received Surfliner equipment. As for the Talgo, its listed under Cascades, Talgo is the name of the equipment.

Viewliner is right about those two other routes. With regard to the discontinued routes, basically, when I have time... <_<

Aloha

Thank You, Mahalo

I used the name Talgo as I couldn't remember the name used Mount P...? or somthing like this.

Well Mount P...., sounds more like one of the individual names given to the Talgo Trainsets. They are:

Mount Baker

Mount Rainer

Mount Hood

Mount Olympus

and the odd ball of the family the,

Las Vegas.

He is probably referring to the names of the Cascades trains before they were all called "Cascades". I think there was a train called the Mount Baker International or something to that effect.

Could be that too. :)

Looked it up on Trainweb. Before the Talgo trains there was the Mt. Adams (Seattle-Portland) and the Mt. Baker International (Seattle-Vancouver). When the Talgo trains were put in service those names were retained, but later changed to Cascades as we know it today.

Aloha

Since it has been awhile I will ask again. Is there some timetable to add former routes. I want to add the Broadway Limited from Philadelphia to Chicago. And the Desert Win from Chicago to La. Also LA to Vegas on a separate trip.

Mahalo = Thanks

Eric

Okay. Here's why adding discontinued routes isn't as easy as pie.

The underlying database doesn't allow for anything other than one set of route data - meaning that the whole application does its matching against a single set of routes, cities, stations, mileage, etc. In order to have more than one set of data, the database and pieces of the application would have to be rewritten to accommodate.

Luckily (for you), a new project is on the horizon that will make use of multiple sets of old data. This data will tie into MileTrak for the addition and tracking of discontinued or older routes. You must realize this is a mammoth task, as everything has to be manually entered from old printed matter.

Once the main database schema for discontinued routes is established, it will be a trivial matter to add another timetable, or another year. At that time I may also solicit some donations of old timetables for purposes of data entry. (I have a good list from the past six or seven years, but nothing prior to that)

I think I did mention some time ago about this year being difficult on time. I am constantly doing schoolwork and college entrance exams as well as worrying about work and other obligations. Sitting at a terminal typing mileage and cities from booklets is not a task I look forward to every day after having just gotten home from class, or after spending four hours programming for work. I guess it is hard for people to understand the demands on my time when things are left to languish for two, three, four months, but I really can't explain it much better.

thanks

Would there be any possibility of adding some old station stops to existing routes?

Lake Cities: Toledo, OH (Detroit-to-Toledo segment was replaced by Detroit-to-Pontiac segment)

International: Hammond-Whiting, IN

Both of these station stops no longer exist on those routes today, but they did in the past 10 years, which is preventing me from accurately logging my mileages.

Perhaps as a fix for the first one, maybe another train route entry could be entered in the MileTrak database as Lake Cities: DET-TOL for just the missing segment. without messing with the exisiting "Lake Cities" route in the database.

Also an FYI on one other change in Michigan routes as far as train names only are concerned:

Wolverine, Lake Cities & Twilight Limited = "Blue Water" in current timetable

Thanks,

Scott :D

If I did this, then the mileage calculator would think those were valid cities when it does its thing to find the lowest mileage. It needs separate data.

Anthony,

I would be glad to help over the summer with entering data. I'm not a programming type but if it is just a time consuming project (as opposed to a skilled "brain intensive" project) I willing to work on it.

Thanks for the offer. I'll have to figure out the new database structure before any input can happen, but we'll see. :)

I am acquiring quite a number of older timetables to assist in discontinued route entry.

Aloha

Mahalo for continuing your efforts as I now have most of my travel listed I am impressed with the amount of miles I have acumalated. :D
