The continuing abandonment of rail lines
Let's put the blame for this squarely on the shoulders of those truly responsible. That's federal and provincial politicians and their civil servants who have no planning horizon past the next election.
We are a society enslaved to the motor vehicle, and we gloried in paralleling virtually every mile of railway with roads, sparing no expense. Now we have a road network we cannot afford to maintain... We think our roads are free and expect politicians to fix, improve and expand them.
...
Politicians can only think about infrastructure and that usually means road with all too little thought for the water and sewer lines under those roads that are rapidly decaying.
Wouldn't it be nice to have politicians at all levels who actually planned for the long range and reduced our dependence on the motor vehicle?
