We are looking to travel Chicago to Denver. Amtrak allows 2 adults and 3 children to share 1 family bedroom, but the description says it accomodates four people. Is it possible to sleep five? If so, is one of the adult beds big enough for two adults to share? Maybe there is enough room with all four beds in use to fit a pack n play on the floor somewhere?

Any comments appreciated! Thank you!

Hi Family Trip! I am taking the Zephyr next week and plan on looking at one of the family bedrooms if possible. This time, my first trip, I am only traveling with one of my children, so I booked a roomette.

I'm sure that several of these very knowledgable members will chime in and answer your question faster than I can investigate it myself though!

Once the beds are down, there definately won't be enough room for a pack N play.

Now, the lower adult bed could sleep two adults if they are on the thin side. Otherwise, I'd suggest one adult and the smallest child in the lower adult bed. The two kid's beds are not roomey enough for more than one child. Also keep in mind that the kid's beds are kid sized. The longest bed is only 4'9". The lower adult bed is 3'4" wide and 6'3" long.

Aloha

Might be possible, but very uncomfortable. even though it may be the biggest room in a sleeper it is still small. I have no Idea what a "pack n play is as my daughter is now a mother but I would guess it won't fit, and for sure when the beds are made up it definitely won't.

With five of you taking a lower level roomette in addition may be worth the money in more comfort.

I would post the link to the room diagrams if I could find it, hopefully someone else has it. :)

Thanks! I saw the diagrams and videos and it wasn't completely clear if there was quite enough room. We'll look into an extra roomette, but at that price, we're paying $1000 more than 5 airfares.

As long as at least two of the kids are haven't reached their teenage years, you should be just fine in the family room. Put the smallest child with the smallest adult in the lower adult bed and you'll be fine. During the day, the room has plenty of room. You could probably invite another 4 or 5 friends into the room during the day.

Don't forget to that those price are included for meals (dinner and maybe breakfast if the train is late).

To reserve for 5 passengers in family room, you'll have to use the phone, not on-line reservation. I'm not sure if it is allowed for 5 or not.

You might have to pay extra for food for the fourth person.
I'm guessing that you meant to say the fifth person, as 4 meals are included with the family room. And something tells me that if one family member can fit in a pack N play, they probably don't eat all that much. So whatever they'll need to buy shouldn't be too bad, and that's assuming that they aren't being feed from mommy and daddy's plates.

I would say no to five people in there. We had that room last year and it was just my daughter (newly graduated from high school), my husband and I. Went the beds were down, she slept on the sofa that kind of pulled out, I slept on the kids's bed, my husband slept above my daughter. Now there would have been room for one more kid bed. How old are the kids?

The kids will be 3, 7 and 9 at the time of travel.

I talked to a phone rep and it is possible to book 5 into a family suite. She didn't seem to know if an adjacent roomette could be guaranteed and said when she tried to enter it, the roomette came up in a different car. That would be a problem, too...

They can guarantee a room right next to the family room. She was probably a newer agent and just punched in asking for the lowest priced room. That could easily land you anywhere in the train's sleepers. You'll need to get an agent who knows how to request a specific room.

But it can definately be done. In fact, I just did it on the Auto Train. And mine was more complicated, as I booked the family room and one roomette using AGR points. I then called up and booked another two roomettes and paid for them via a credit card. So I've got 3 of the 4 roomettes downstairs, as well as the family room.

Speaking on that subject, are there discounts for, say, 6 - 10 people reserving a block of rooms together or would that cost extra? ;)

I think you only get such discounts if you book as a group.
Correct, they only discount if you book as a group. I believe that the minimum is 20 people though. And I'm not sure if they offer discounts on the rooms or just on the rail fare. I think that it's only on the later though.

Even if your group was big enough to charter a car?

Thanks again, all. We ended up booking the family suite only, but decided to fly one way and take the train back. Hopefully, trains will be running through Iowa in 3 weeks.
