I was at a VTA light rail station which has a single fare machine. It was not working, with an alarm that sounded like a car alarm, but not really as loud. On the screen was a message that the machine was out of service with a phone number to call. At the top was the date and a time. The time was more than an hour ago, so I'm guessing it was the time it got set off.

I'm guessing someone did something where the machine was programmed to set off an alarm in case someone is trying to break into the cash box. I've seen these machines out of service. Sometimes it gives a message that bills aren't accepted or coins aren't accepted if either hopper is full. I've also seen one completely out of service, but not with an audible alarm. I suppose these are in unstaffed stations where maybe the alarm might call attention to a burglar.

Did you call/email"VTA" and report it?
It seems pretty obvious to me that these machines are linked to a main server. I don't think the phone number was anything more than to ask what to do if one can't buy a ticket.

I'm not sure why nobody showed up quickly, since this machine was really close to VTA headquarters.
