For those among us here who take an interest in how railways are funded this article that I include a reference to will give some interesting information on the financing challenges faced by Indian Railways and how it addresses them. The Finance Commissioner of Railways who is providing this information is my cousin in law.
For reference 1 crore is 1,00,00,000 or 10 million. 1 USD (US Dollar) is about 66.5 INR (Indian Rupee) today.
Note that Indian Railways pays in a dividend of 4% based on the net budget that is allocated to the Railways by the federal government. Since it has an operating ratio of about 94% it gets to jeep the 2% point difference between the dividends that it owes and the cash that it generates.
