Just a few words to finish off our "One and a half Brits" American trip report.. not so much a report, more a series of jottings..
While in Las Vegas we decided to hire a car for a few days, and I chose a convertible. A new ford Mustang, just right for a drive to the Grand Canyon.
Early start that Monday, Aidan was a bit under the weather at first. Drove out past the Dam, and on into Williams, where we spent the night. Had a walk around the town, and took a couple of pics of the rail station, where you can catch a train up to the Canyon.
Early start again, sunny day, roof down.. got a bit burnt on my arms, but what the heck! Vegas temps were 108-110 F, a record, so they said, that weekend.
After the Canyon we drove east and then north, a wonderful drive through some red rock outcrops, back to Vegas the long way round.
Next day after a trip out to “the valley of fire” I had to take the car back that afternoon.
Early start again next am, took a cab to the greyhound bus station and collected our tickets for LA. Early to board as we were going to the Union Station.
Stopped in Baker as a passenger had need of frequent rest room facilities, and got a close look at the world’s tallest thermometer at last!
Left our luggage in the facility at LA Union station, and took the Metro into town to buy a few provisions, water, beer, for our trip back to Chicago on the Chief..
Allocated the last two seats together, train rather full. Fairly tired for trip back to Chicago, so the outside scenery was viewed through a haze of fatigue, but still very scenic.
Dining car refrigeration broke during the last night, so we got a free McDonalds for breakfast and a free sandwich at lunch.
Overnight hotel near the Airport and back into Chicago next day, long wait for the Lake shore that night. Pleased to find the Chicago Blues festival on Grant Park in full swing.. even bought the T shirt!
Train an hour late into NY, the following evening, very full train again.
Hotel out near JFK, Jamaica/Queens area, last but one stop on metro line F.
The last day was just spent downtown, a little shopping, enjoying the NY vibe,
and preparing for the early morning flight home next day. Very convenient
location on the F line with express trains into town for $2.25 each way, and the
Q3 bus outside the door for our ride to the Airport at 6am.
I used to favour EWR and the budget hotels out there, but will certainly consider the same hotel for any future trips to the big apple.
That’s all folks!
