There are parallels to the destruction of the original Euston station in London and its replacement by the present IKEA box.

There is right now a movement to rebuild the doric arch, which was the most iconic part of the old complex.

I remember back in '77 - '78 participating in a placard carrying march outside Radio City Music Hall campaigning to save it from destruction (to be replaced by an office tower). Fortunately we won that one.

The previous Grand Central did lose its majestic arched roof car shed to be replaced by the current subterranean edifice. But that was so far back that hardly remembers anything about it.
