Amtrak recently changed access to the Metropolitan Lounge in Los Angeles to not allow Surfliner business class passengers. But what about business class passengers aboard the Coast Starlight -- can they use the lounge? Please reply if you know, for I will be traveling soon! Much appreciated ....

Different train (its a "long distance" train), you should be ok.

Question: are arriving sleeping car passengers with connections to Surfliner business class allowed access to the lounge?
According to Amtrak's official lounge access policy, yes. Sleeper car passengers are entitled to use of the lounge the same day as travel, either arriving or departing. So your sleeper ticket entitles you to lounge access despite the fact your Surflinrr BC ticket no longer does at LA. BC access is not consistent across the system, but sleeper access is:

  • Amtrak passengers with a same-day travel ticket (departure or arrival) in First Class or sleeping car accommodations.

Whether the person on duty in the lounge honors it is another question. It's Amtrak, YMMV. I'd come armed with a copy of the lounge access policy just in case.

I just read the access policy as part of formulating a reply to @Eric in East County's post. It turns out the Starlight Business Class is explicitly permitted access to the LA lounge in the policy, and Surfliner BC is explicitly denied.

However, once the lounge reaches capacity per fire marshal mandate, even a sleeping car passenger may be denied access in LA. It happened to us.
That kind of thing likely part of the reason they restricted access by Pacific Surfliner Business Class passengers. That lounge is small and would get really packed before Surfliner departures.
