Lodging near LAUS

Hello:

I know this has been discussed before, but since I am the one traveling to CA, I now would like some information. We are taking the Coast Starlate into LAUS in Oct. and would like to have an idea of some lodging choices when we arrive. I realize this train runs late, so should one make reservations ahead of time or just chance it arriving close to schedule? Are there any hotels close by that are decent enough to walk or take a short cab ride to? We will be leaving on the SW Chief the following day, but that is not until 6:15. Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

There's a Days Inn within walking distance... but keep in mind this is not the best of neighborhoods. There are taxis always on call at the front entrance if you don't want to make the walk.

That would be the Days Inn Downtown, 711 North Main St., (213) 680-0200. They used to have a discounted rate for Amtrak passengers & probably still do. It's across from the historic Olvera Street/Plaza de Los Angeles, on the edge of Chinatown, & a half-block from Philippe's The Original, an L.A. landmark restaurant. You shouldn't need a reservation if you're traveling in October, but to be on the safe side call ahead to make sure.

Depending on how much luggage you're taking with you to the hotel & what time you arrive, cabbing it may be best. Don't be surprised, however, to encounter an unhappy cabbie if he's waited in a queue only to pick up a fare going across the street!

You could do Priceline. I have gotten the Miyako Hotel for $50/night. It is at 328 E. First Street between Alameda and San Pablo. Union Station is on Alameda maybe a quarter mile down. I walk it myself. If you do your bidding right you'll almost certainly get a better deal than the Days Inn. Try it - it's exciting!
