Whatever siding I'm sitting on!
For those of you who have iPhones, a good iBook is "The Greatest Highway Of the World"!

It is a 1921 (essentially) route guide of the NYC from New York to Chicago. (The LSL follows most of this route!) It also includes the times that certain trains pass thru the stations enroute. Included is the 20th Century Limited!

And best of all, it's a FREE ebook!

I've been resisting getting into eBooks. I do a lot of reading but I get my books at a discount from Abe Books. Many for a couple books and free shipping.

I feel for the price of a Kindle, etc I can buy 50 discounted books.

What would be the best reason for me to switch?

Well, I'm not saying at all that you have to switch. But here are a few reasons I have an iPhone:

  1. It is a cell phone!

  2. I have (IIRC) 12 ebooks right now on it. Total weight of the phone and books - a few ounces!
  3. If I were to bring those 12 books on a trip with me, I would need an extra suitcase - and it would weigh many pounds!
  4. I always carry my cell phone, and thus those ebooks!
  5. Ebooks are usually cheaper than "regular" books. Example - One I looked at last night was $26 at the bookstore, $15.xx plus $4 shipping on line or $13.99 as an ebook!

Try bringing those 50 books aboard a train.

As an e-book consumer and as an author who has republished his mystery novels as e-books, I can tell you that I'm not looking back!

The Traveler is right about the ease of carrying a dozen (or more) e-books on a trip and saving bulk and weight. Also, slightly older (three years or so) popular books are available as e-books for as little as $2.99, and there's no shipping charge or sales tax either.

The cost of e-book hardware is going down, too, as the technology improves by leaps and bounds. You can now get an excellent Kindle for $99.

My wife uses and loves her Kindle. Our local public library now can let her check out books for free for the Kindle - 3 weeks and then its gone. Many libraries across the US are doing this.

I like recorded books for train travel. The same portability as ebooks, but with recorded books I can listen and enjoy the scenery at the same time. The libraries are offering more of these titles, too.
