whats the rate of lost luggage with amtrak? im packing 2 bags for my big trip tomorrow - just wondering if they are like the airlines and misplace, misroute bags often???

i will be checking 2 large suitcases which i will not need to access during the trip (if that matters), will the bags be in the same car as me regardless?

thanks for any input

t minus 24 1/2 hours till departure...

I'm not real sure just what Amtrak's rate is, but the simple reality is that they don't loose many bags. In part because they simply don't handle the volume of bags that an airline handles. Not suggesting that it doesn't happen, but it doesn't happen often.

And no, the bags will be in the baggage car, not your car.

Amtrak lost one of my bags for two days, but later found it, instead of new york it went to philadelphia. They gave me cash to get some stuff till they found the bag. Other than that, they have always showed up as expected.

I usually check my luggage. Never had a problem

Be certain not to exceed the 50 pound weight limit.

You didnt say if you were in a sleeper or coach but you can carry on your luggage, place it in the rack downstairs(if in a Superliner) and access it as needed! Most pax carry a small bag with their essentials and keep their valuables with them in their room or car!Shouldnt have to worry unless you are making lots of connections or going somewhere there is no checked baggage?Have a good trip! :)

As Alan stated, the lost bag rate or mis-sent rate on Amtrak is very low. At places like say NYP or CHI where there may be multiple trains departing, it could be put on the wrong train. (But that is not very likely either.) But at say RNO (where there is only 1 train a day), it is very unlikely to be put on the wrong train! :D

I have yet seen a bag I've checked on Amtrak mistakenly routed to London or Rio!

Lucky. Last week on #49 the engineer got a call after we left a station (I forget which) that the baggage car had a door partially open, with bags waddling towards the opening...
