Two part question for a newbie. I couldn't find another thread on this.

If we leave our luggage in the overhead storage above our seats and go to sit in the quiet car, do we need to worry about it being stolen?  Are we allowed to reserve our seats under our luggage while we are in that quiet car or should we take our luggage and give up our seat in the regular car?    Seems I'd be taking two seats up that way and people getting on the train won't know that the seat is occupied if I'm not in it or leave a coat or something to mark such.  I guess I'm wondering about car hoping on a 7 hour ride.

Thanks for your help.  Tomorrow is my first trip on a train, Northeast Regional.

When the conductor comes by for your ticket, s/he will put a seat check on the overhead with a code designating your destination.  If you want to move to the quiet car, you'll need to take your luggage and seat check with you....and hope you find a seat.  The quiet car is just regular car, it's nothing special other than everyone should be quiet or talk in whispers.

Perhaps you're thinking of the cafe car which has tables?  If so, then you'd live your luggage and seat check and go to the cafe car.  No one should sit in your seat since the seat check is there to let people know it's occupied.

Thanks AmtrakBlue - Are you allowed to talk quietly "library voice" in the quiet car?  We will have our cell phones on vibrate on the train anyway.

Yes, you can use your library voice in the quiet car.  If you want, you can just go to that car and stay for you're whole trip.  It's usually the next to last car

Which train will you be on and what city pairs?  I'm traveling WIL (Wilmington, DE) to BAL (Baltimore) and back tomorrow.

Quiet Car

Need a quiet space to work or unwind? Quiet Cars are available on many corridor and short-distance trains. Guests are asked to limit conversation and speak in subdued tones. Phone calls are not allowed and all portable electronic devices must be muted or used with headphones (passengers using headphones must keep the volume low enough so that the audio cannot be heard by other passengers.) Low overhead lighting creates a restful atmosphere for all passengers, but reading lights are available.

Seating in the Quiet Car is on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be reserved. There is no additional charge to sit in the Quiet Car, but passengers are asked to occupy only one seat per person. Please do not use adjacent seat space for personal belongings. Passengers who board trains and find that seats are only available in the Quiet Car must follow the Quiet Car guidelines.

Look for the Quiet Car symbol on the following trains:
