Maine Eastern passenger service not renewed

I know this is Monday Morning Quarterbacking, but (not remembering the layouts of the tracks up there) could the state have handed a slot pair to Maine Eastern to extend their excursion to Portland (and leaned on both ME and Amtrak to cross-list)? IIRC, Charlie and I tried to stick a trip together to hit this but it was always such a mess to make it work that we ultimately passed.

The schedule times are just slightly too long to do it without an overnight, no matter how you schedule it. I managed to get in on one of the last trips by staying overnight in Brunswick.
If the state was willing to put just a little bit of extra money in to upgrade the Brunswick-Rockland tracks (or perhaps tracks somewhere else along the line) you could set it up as a day trip from Boston.
