A 34-year-old man struck by a train Monday night in Redding died this morning at Mercy Medical Center, it was announced this afternoon by the Shasta County coroner's office.

I feel sorry for the engineer. There is no way for him to stop on time. Taking a life even though it is not his fault will be something he will have to live with for the rest of his life.
 
Let me say just one more thing about high speed crossing accidents that usually end in fatalities. I had to personally determine if,indeed, the "accident" was my fault or the "trespassers". After a lot of sleepless nights I HAD to assume that the person trying to run the train had full intentions of beating the train but lost the bet. Call it dumb, suicide or just plain ignorance but I could not live my life believing that I had "killed" someone intentionally.I remember all 17 that perished under my engines to this day.
