I live in Nottingham, England, and mostly post reports about my foreign rail trips, on Amtrak or in mainland Europe.

This mini report is about a short local bus and train trip... Nottingham to Mansfield by bus (free old folks bus pass!) and Mansfield to Worksop by train.

Both Mansfield and Worksop were badly affected by closures of coal local mines about 25 years ago, and have never attracted many new businesses to cope with the high unemployment rates.

Although Mansfield is only 30 minutes away from Nottingham, I have never been to have a look around, just passed through en-route to elsewhere. I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of interesting buildings seen from the bus... I must go back and have a proper look around... once again, just passing through, to Worksop this time!

Train to Worksop from Mansfield, by a happy coincidence, I got chatting to an old chap, 82, on the station platform, who told me a little about his time as a former coal miner. Like many older folk, he was not too happy with how society has changed, as he saw it for the worse...

I will let my pictures explain what the train looks like, and the station at Worksop...

Nice day trip and pics Eddie! We used to have free local transportation for Seniors here in Austin ( Bus and Light Rail) but that's long gone!

Forgotten English towns are alot like those in our Rust Belt and those located on the Plains,( mostly railroad, farming and ranching) and Deserts( mining and those located on forgotten highways)
