Wow... What a mess!! I hope they get back to running as safely as possible. That is some crazy weather out there... crazy hot or crazy storms.... At least no trains derailed or crashed due to washed out tracks.

Metro North has mostly completed the repair. Impressive. Most service along the line will resume tomorrow 7/12.

Maybe the folks running the Pacific Surfliner route should take a trip to New York and get some tips from Metro-North about how to quickly fix a washed-out railroad. (Though I think the situation in California was different, wasn't it landslides from above rather than having the ocean wash out the track?)

Your last sentence identifies why this would be a waste of everyone's time.

The situation on the Surf Line is not a past tense thing. Land subsidence there is a continuing thing. All one can do is periodically shore up the RoW, or as planned, abandon that RoW and move to a different more stable one.
