Hi, I have learned so much from your posts!

That being said, as a first-time Amtrakker (in september), I am taking the Three Rivers (40) to Penn Station in NYC.

Are they going to let me take a smoke break along the way? ( I don't change trains at all )

It says 'TRAY MEAL' in the train's info... is this what y'all have been talking about as far as the meal selections go? I know there's not a diner car. Any food recommendations as far as choices are concerned? I leave Pittsburgh at 10am and arrive at Penn Station at 8:10pm.

Thanks in advance!

yes, that's what we've been discussing ad nauseum regarding the 3 Rivers. You didn't specify if you were travelling first-class or in coach. When I travelled on that train from RDW to Philly in May 2004, the dining car (and the meal service) was available only to the sleeper passengers. The Coach passengers had to make do with the meals that came from the snack/bar/lounge selection.

I also think I remember them having at least one stop that was long enough for a smoke break. The 3 Rivers had one of the most professional and pleasant crws that I've come across in all of my train travels - They were quite proficient in their demenor to the passengers and thier job skills.

Thanks for the info. I will be travelling coach (forgot to add that info earlier).

I just was a little confused about the "tray meal" that apparently is offered on my leg of the trip since there isn't a dining car. Would they advertise the tray meal if it was only being offered to sleeper passengers?

I'm glad to hear that you had a decent crew... maybe I will get lucky!

;)

hi k,

i just traveled a few weeks ago on 3 rivers. NYC to chicago. It was quite late but I didn't care as the scenery was pretty and the crew so nice. Great ride. You'll have a good time. Don't worry bout the food; just hang out in the lounge car and play cards. The attendant will tell you what food is available. It's all the prepackaged stuff, but not bad.
