I don't know if this should be a seperate thread, but I would like to know who all took advantage of National Train Day, where they are going and if they are taking any Amtrak newbies with them.

I'm going to DEN and personally got 3 Amtrak newbies to go. One is my best friend from work whose son lives in DEN and the other two are a couple, he works with me as well, is a tad younger and able to "jump at the chance" at a good deal with his girlfriend.

PS. Remember, to take advantage of this in LNK, it means boarding (if on time) at 12:08am and then arriving back in LNK at 4:40am. Not real conducive times to travel.

We're (Audrey and I) are taking the Silver Star to ALX hoping to get some lunch in a Heritage Diner, and heading back on the Palmetto Both to and from NYP, by the way.

it's a total coincidence that i will be in chicago on may 10 (on the chief, from KC). we'll probably just breeze through union station since we're not actually traveling that day.

I'm taking a morning "ride" (round trip) to BOS and an afternoon "ride" (round trip) to NHV just to rack up AGR points! :D And since I was targeted for the double points offer, my 2 "rides" that day will earn me 800 AGR points!

I probably could have worked in 1 or 2 more trips that day - but I didn't want to be greedy!

I am probably going to NYP, since I live on LI.

Is the spring timetable available on the 10th, since it takes effect 2 days later?

It should be out by then. They usually start having them available for handout a week or two in advance of the effective date.

I've not decided where to go. Anyone want a travel buddy over that weekend? It doesn't matter where you live or are going. If anything is in Texas, I might do that.

I do not know the extent of them, but there are supposed to be festivities occuring at Tampa Union Station here in FL as well.

Yep, finally logged in for a change!

OBS gone freight....

A friend of mine and I will most likely be taking 98 up to DC on the 9th and then 89 back to FLO on the 11th. Anybody else going to be in DC that day?

There are 6 of us travelling, 5 of whom are first-time rail riders :) Going to CHI for the day, #49 there, #30 returning.

We are looking forward to it and the BOGO is what made us take the plunge!

Has anyone considered doing informal events in cities that aren't in the official list? Mr. Haithcoat, where will you be spending the day?

There are informal events planned in Norman, Oklahoma (Heartland Flyer) and Newton, Kansas (SW Chief). Part of this is directly connected to the bi-state campaign for expanded daytime passenger service in Kansas and Okalhoma.

I've decided to attend the event at either Dallas or Fort Worth stations. Probably both, as I'll make a TRE trip between the two. If anyone is in the area, and wants to meet, let me know!

I recieved an e-mail from Pro Rail Nebraska asking me to help out at our station in LNK. The Amtrak station is in the heart of the "Farmers Market." It was my idea to Jim Brezinski (a guy just under Brian Rosenthal at Amtrak) to have us there EVERY Saturday morning with literature, the station unlocked so folks could use the restroom and push rail travel. When the CZ is REAL late, alot of folks meander over to the CZ and talk "I've always wanted to do this". There's about 4,000 people that goes to this every Saturday from May-Oct. I had to decline the invitation to help on National Train Day cuz I"M GONNA BE ON A TRAIN!!!!! :) :) :)

I'll be in NY Penn as well, albeit briefly. The wife and I are taking advantage of the free companion and making a day trip to NY to catch a broadway matinee show (with an AGR promotional discount no less!), probably tour the Statue of Liberty (which neither of us have done), and then head back to Baltimore that evening. But I'll definitely be in NYP around 12:45-1:00 PM to see what's going on.

I'll get to NYP in time to hear the speech, then immediately after, take the subway to Newark Penn. Reason: Free platform access, photography permitted. :p

Come back at 2 to see the model trains.

Chicago lists a train tour of Amtrak equipment starting at 11a. Anybody have the inside track on what kind of equipment will be on display? I'm hoping that one of the Pacific Parlour cars will be there on its way out west. The display equipment will probably, (hopefully), be the cleanist Amtrak equipment in the country.

Aww, my nearest train station isnt having any event. All those fun activities and prizes and free cake. No fair!
