Starting with the schedule change going into effect December 14, in the Netherlands at every train station there will be a train coming every half an hour in each direction. This is the new minimum standard, introduced by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (state-owned Netherlands Railroad Company, abbreviated NS).

This level of service already existed at most Dutch rail lines, and now there are four lines that will see extra "Sprinter" service because of the new standard: Arnhem to Ede/Wageningen, Breda to Dordrecht, Roosendaal to Dordrecht und Heerlen to Sittard. Only in exceptional cases it should happen from now on, that there's service only once an hour. "We believe, that our travelers during the course of the day have to be able to rely on that, that they will be able to get onto a train within the next half an hour", says Time Huges, CEO of NS. On most lines within the Netherlands, there are much more long-distance and regional trains per hour than only two. In addition, there will be newly added rail service for "party people" up to 2 a.m. on weekends, as well as new service to Amsterdam Schiphol airport during the night, and expanded international service to Brussels in Belgium and Berlin in Germany.
