So on 6/30 (6/29 here in the good ol' US of A), China opened their newly dedicated passenger ROW offering riders a trip from Shanghai to Beijing in 4 hours and 48 minutes. That's 814 miles. That's... 175 MPH.

Took 'em 3 years to build. Project started in '08 (no telling how many weeks prior to that they spent on environmental studies). Track was finished in November 2010, catenary was finished in Feb of this year, and service starts today.

They cancelled a sleeper version of the train because it gets there too quick.

Nothing fatal, then?
No. If there were something fatal I would have said as much ;) . Just mechanical and electrical issues with some delays. Shanghai Daily is online (and in English) they do report issues with the line if they happen.
