It's a hilarious fact that the new EB schedule isn't put in the new TT.
??

I see it on TT Page 80......(PDF page 84)........

Or is that the old schedule, that was supposed to be changed? Not sure what you mean.....

The modified schedule for the Empire Builder is only supposed to be temporary. In the news release sent out announcing the schedule the Route Director for the Empire Builder said... “We will assess the ability of BNSF to dispatch the Empire Builder with better reliability on this schedule, with further schedule changes possible in June.” That's why it's not changed in the Summer/Fall timetable. It could be further tweaked or return to normal.

I think it's neat that Amtrak still prints a system timetable... but this is why it's such an antiquated thing. It might already be out of date as it goes to press.

On the other hand, online timetables can be changed in seconds. That's why Greyhound and most of the airlines stopped printing system timetable years ago.

Frankly the printed system timetables is something I wouldn't mind Amtrak cutting for costs (I want my shampoo back in the sleepers!) or at least charge people a small amount of money to buy one to recoup the printing charges.

There is a substantial amount of advertisements in the system timetable which may recover a lot of the printing costs.

I agree....there used to be no outside advertising in the timetables...only Company promotional blurbs.... Who knows? Perhaps they can actually make a small profit on them, although I kind of doubt it.....

As per Clark Gable- "We charge a dime a newspaper, and each one costs at least 10 cents to produce, we make our money on the advertising!" If you cite the movie I'll be impressed.

I know he did a few movies where he was in the newspaper biz...I took a shot...failed to impress

The host railroads listing for the Wolverine is incorrect. It still lists Battle Creek - Detroit as being owned by NS.

Besides the dropping of the station addresses and the notes & new SPUD stop for the EB (imaginary) schedule, anyone see any other notable changes in the new system timetable or schedules taking effect on June 9?

I know this may be controversial,,,, but why not just sell the advertising on the web/pdf version if PBS can do it,,,

All enhanced language was dropped although the enhanced trains generally retain much of the 'enhancement' such as china plates and at seat

Meal for coach.

The online PDF version does have ads (I'll point out that MOST of the ads are for travel agencies or from the tourism boards of cities or states. I doubt Amtrak is charging them much.)

I'm not advocating that Amtrak stop providing information on when and where to catch a train for free. I'm not even against providing printed timetables for individual lines for free. The only thing I find a bit strange is this bi-annual printed system timetable. It's 140+ pages long and in full-color --and speaking from experience-- that's not cheap to produce.

Again it's neat and very old-school of Amtrak to publish one... but it's also become antiquated and unnecessary with most of us being able to access the internet.

That being said, if the advertising is covering the printing costs... print away!

While I agree that the printed timetable is pretty outdated and I mainly refer to the PDF or website. I always keep a couple copies on hand to give to friends or coworkers who are considering trying the train. It is much easier for a newbie to use and understand than the website.

I have the previous version, thanks to a friend who picked one up for me....but, will Amtrak send me the updated version via snail mail, if I call and request one? I'm @ 100 miles from the nearest Amtrak station!

Is there a way to download the new system timetable, like there was before? (I didn't see that on there when I looked.)

The Summer-Fall 2014 system timetable is on the website Timetable page near the top. What is odd is that the new timetable is a 17.1 MB file versus 9.7 MB for the Winter-Spring timetable.

The new paper timetables showed up in a pile of boxes at PHL within the past 24 hrs. No misspellings of the Amtrak name this time, although I noticed they played it safe by saying "National Railroad Passenger Corporation" on the box.
