Hello, I am new to the forum, I've been lurking here for a couple of weeks and enjoying all the valuable insight and information here. I'll be taking my first overnight train ride in mid-May and am so excited that I can hardly stand it!
I'm taking the Chief from Los Angeles to Kansas City to visit family. Specifically, my niece is graduating. I'll return via the SWC after spending most of a week in Missouri. I have a roomette for the eastbound trip but only a coach ticket for westbound (rooms have gone to a prohibitively high price already for my return dates and I just can't swing it.) So I guess I'll be experiencing the full spectrum of LD travel, and if it turns out I dislike sleeping in coach I'll never do it again LOL I think it won't be that bad, and anyway it's only two nights.
Some friends think it's cool and some friends think I've gone crazy. "Why the train? You can fly in a fraction of the time." I probably won't have to convince anyone on this board how ineffective that argument is I really hate flying, hate it more every year, it's about one part anxiety and eight parts homicidal irritation when I have to do it. When we had to start taking off our shoes was my tipping point - I stopped flying anywhere for fun or vacation and now all my summer vacations are road trips. These days I ride a motorcycle all over this beautiful country of ours every chance I get, and appreciate and soak in all the wonderful sights you'll never see from 25,000 ft.
The train? Is a new road trip, a new adventure, a new experience. I think I am going to enjoy it TREMENDOUSLY.
