I'm planning a trip from New York City to Niagara Falls, on the Maple Leaf train. After staying a few days I'd like to go up to Toronto, which the Maple Leaf does go to. But, Amtrak's website won't let you book that, probably because it's entirely within Canada. Anyone know if it's possible at all?

I could take the Canadian VIA train from Niagara to Toronto but they have different luggage restrictions. Their allowed carry-on size is about half of what Amtrak allows, so that's a problem...

I just went to the website to test this out, and I can confirm that from Niagara Falls, ON (NFS) to Toronto, ON (TWO), you do get an error message. However from Niagara Falls, NY to Toronto, ON, you can book. so perhaps it's something as simple as coming back across the border?

Use VIA rails website to book the train from Niagara Falls to Toronto they operate the train on that side of the border.
Yes, in Canada the Maple Leaf is VIA Train #97 - #98 (not #63 - #64). Amtrak has no involvement other than supplying the equipment. Even the crew is VIA: Engineers and Service Manager (VIA does not have Conductors) and the Food and Booze in the Café is changed out at the Border too. Go to the VIA website and book it there (left side of page)

There is also a second train each way per day between Niagara Falls Ontario and Toronto which uses VIA equipment and if you travel on summer weekends, three more trains each way on Saturday and Sundays (+ one round-trip Friday nights) operated by GO Transit using Bi-level equipment.
