Still didn't work, but fortunately the Chron is included in my public library's online newspaper collection (Newsbank).

Thanks for the tip. The SF Chronicle has a subsidiary website called SFGATE. Most of its main stories also appear there. That's where the second link comes from. All that said, Nolte's article isn't particularly insightful for AU readers, but if it appeals to newbies, that's a good thing. It would have been nice if he had spent a little more ink on the Cuesta Grade, which, to me, is a great feature on the CS route.

I'm sorry for the problem. @PaunchyPirate was able to get it by turning adblocker off. Sfgate usually doesn't block articles. I believe it's supposed to be a truncated freebie version.

Instead of clicking the above link, try this:

• Go to Sfgate.com
• Search Carl Nolte (upper right corner)
• Scroll down to box "From SF Chronicle"
• Select the article

Otherwise, I'm afraid I have no other suggestions.

Wound up in same place and got the same result after navigating through SFgate searching for Carl Nolte, sfgate showedthe article, but as a link to sfchronicle.com. Hit the link and the article showed up and a few seconds later a "subscribe now" pop up obscured it. Will try on the computer instead of phone. Looks like it is being kept behind the Chronicle's paywall to me and not released to sfgate.

Tip to try when faced with a website that wants you to pay to read an article. Try viewing the page using your browser’s “reader mode”. I’m not sure if all browsers have it. Apple‘s Safari does and you can enter the mode with a button click. Reader mode strips out all the added garbage often found around the text in a web page. I have found that it circumvents most newspapers pay walls on their web sites.

That worked. Stripped all the formatting and had to find the specific article again, but it worked.

With so much free access to articles,it's a nuisance to have to go through a paywall. I just don't bother.

It depends on the site for me. Usually, I can get around them by going into dev mode and tweaking the css, but that's not a solution for most. 12ft.io is a lot faster. San Francisco-based publications know better than to make it so easy that removing/editing the blocking css would work. They'll have it so the content isn't just hidden, but isn't loaded at all, other than the brief intro.

As someone above suggested could the article simply be copies and pasted into this discussion? My daughter and her husband will be including the Coast Starlight on an Amtrak trip and I think the article would interest them. With me living in Kansas and they living in Missouri I'm sure the folks at that San Francisco newspaper can understand why we have no interest in subscribing to their newspaper.

There really isn't anything particularly revealing in the article. It's pretty much just the author's impressions. Might be better to just let them make their own discoveries.

I wouldn't want to jeopardize my account, which I rely on every day for my local news, no longer being able to read print newspapers. Others may want to give it a try. As I mentioned, it's a general article, not full of much specific news. That said, it is a nice one to read, mainly because the columnist has a very engaging personality.
