Federal officials Thursday reiterated their call for the Federal Railroad Administration and Amtrak to implement new safety measures along work zones in rail corridors to safely manage train traffic.
The National Transportation Safety Board said Amtrak must stop relying solely on lookouts to protect those working on rails, and instead make use of crash prevention technology known as positive train control (PTC) to prevent work zone fatalities.

Investigators are calling on the railroad to end the use of the “train approach warning” (TAW) system as the only method of on-track safety in corridors where PTC is available.

The paying public want the safest rail travel possible. That's hard to do with this unique American system of shared rail with freight companies. It's a problem of our own making.

How is the U.S. unique in mixing freight and passenger trains? Every other country in the world does it. In addition, the situation in question happened on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, hardly a bastion of freight trains.

We have progressively developed a culture of carelessness believing that there is a technology that will save us from our own follies, while we refuse to change our own behavior to improve the situation. It seems to affect us in every walk of our lives, whether it be rail accidents or saving our own rear ends from a deadly virus or almost anything else. 😐

I see your point.
