Trip report OKC-FTW-CHI-KAL 10/15-10/16

I will be updating this report as we go, will try and write it in real time, will try and keep it in the present tense as much as possible-Cut me a little slack, a writer I am not!

Amtrak 821 Heartland Flyer OKC-FTW Departed on time, (or there about, wasn’t watching the clock but it was on time, or very close to it) boarding was reasonably smooth, other than some backup as a couple of older folks tried to re-arrange everything in their bags blocking the stairs for everyone else boarding. No biggie, was almost comical, since this was the coach-baggage, and there was NOTHING in the baggage area….they had all the room in the world in there, if they thought to use it…oh well. One person did try to board with a cardboard box of clothes and apparently no ticket….Conductor tried to get him to combine the box with stuff in his bags, but in the end let him board with it with a scolding about how he won’t be allowed to next time. He also let him board without a ticket, and told him to call on board to get it sorted out. Didn’t see how that turned out….

Got lucky today, in that the Heartland Flyer normally has only 3 coaches- This trip, coming off the Football Special following the OU/Teas weekend game, had 4 coaches, as well as a Sightseer Lounge (where I’m typing this on a Word doc to post later in a full trip report) which was a nice treat. Also had special wrapping on some windows and the locomotive for the big game, which I thought was pretty cool. Would have been nice if the café was also in this car, but it was closed, they were using the normal café on the lower level of the coach in the middle car of the normal consist. No biggie, just means a walk to get the coffee back to the lounge. I really wish more local/day trains had a true lounge like the SSL, it really makes a big difference, I’m watching some first time riders in this car, and they’re having a ball. Really need a better lounge option on the single level trains also, at least for the LD ones, the amcafe’s just aren’t the same as a true lounge/observation car!

Some on here may have read about the extremely late NB flyer into OKC on Saturday. Talking with the on board crew, they say there was a major mechanical failure on the locomotive but either didn’t know exactly what, or just didn’t want to discuss it in detail. Must have been too bad to move, as the locomotive is sitting in a side track just North of the Ardmore and the good part of the line where the tacks follow the Ouachita River. Rolled into FTW just a little late, but was a good trip, spent the whole time in the SSL working on a table, was actually productive and the 4 hours went very fast. Had good internet signal most places, but dropped calls and net a few times. Still more productive than if I was slogging around the airport! Was a line to check bags, so rather than stick to my plan of dropping the bags off, and wandering around to find something good to eat for lunch, I just hit the Subway in station.

Amtrak 22 Texas Eagle FTW-CHI The inbound 22 was a little late arriving, scheduled for 1:58 it didn’t actually arrive until right around it’s departure time of 2:20. Entertainment while waiting was provided by a guy rocking a sweet mullet, with a camo T-shirt that didn’t quite cover his belly, sleeveless jean jacket, and one of those clear plastic bags a Queen sized beadspread comes in for luggage, containing dozens of movies (Most on VHS). He was rocking to his headset, and slinging rocks with his super duper sling shot. It was entertaining to watch, he had pretty good aim, and range-Able to hit freight cars 4 tracks over, but alas, an Amtrak station person made him knock it off and put it away. Between that point and train arrival, all there was to watch, was his intermittent dancing with his wallet chain swinging, to what I can only assume was to a killer ‘Skynnard track. I have to believe, there was a fight in a trailer last night, he had to go, and she gets to keep the ’84 Camaro Berlinetta……..

22 arrived, and I got on the 2220 car, behind the Transdorm in Roomette 3. Was hoping reports were wrong, and the sleepers were still on the rear but it was not to be-2 cars back from the horn. Glad I brought earplugs. Antonio got me settled in, and took off to deal with more demanding customers boarding at Ft. Worth. Seems he’s going to have his hands full with a few of them….again, should be good entertainment for the ride from here to Chicago. So, I’m settled in to my Roomette, waiting to pull out. Currently backing out of the station almost exactly 20 minutes late. Good thing I’m not in TOO much of a hurry. About ready for a nap, all that’s keeping me awake right now, is waiting for the CO to come scan my ticket, then, I’m out for a while. Roomette was a little worn, but clean, got the normal skymall shopping mag, route guide, schedule and safety card, as well as a few bottles of water all laid out. This roomette is different from what I’ve had before, this one has no little closet, just a hanger rack. I think I like this better, seems a little bigger this way. As I was typing, CO scanned my ticket, so I’m off for a nap. Hope the horn doesn’t keep me awake! Will post this, and update as I get around to it, in installments, so it doesn’t get too big for one post. More to come tonight somewhere around Texarkana if all goes well.

Youre in a Superliner II as opposed to the older I's that have the Small Enclosed Closet! And you are correct, there is more Storage Room than in a I, as well as having a little more headroom in the Upper Bunk due to a curved roof!! Your SCA is an Excellent One, hope you enjoy the ride, you're on my home Train, one I have to ride to go anywhere on Amtrak! Looking forward to further updates from the Eagle!

Will do so in the am, one of those fortuitous events that sometimes happen on the train kept me from updating, will explain it all in the morning. It's a small world!!!

Ok, back to it-Rolling out of St. Louis right now, I'll catch it back up to this point. After my little nap, I did some work on the computer, and generally vegged out. After leaving Ft Worth, time got made up, and we've been early ever since, sometimes by over an hour.... Did the late dinner reservation for 7:30, (Steak, baked Potato and mixed veg-Was ok, not great, but ok) and was paired with a couple from the Gulf Coast of TX.....turns out, he's recently retired, and used to work with several people I worked with in the past. Go figure! He knew one of my friends really well, so we sat in the diner for a while telling old war stories and drinking Sierra Nevada Pale AIe until they kicked us out. Decided I wanted a few more to help me sleep, and hit the SSL lower level for a few more beers before turning in around 11. I have never slept great on nthe train, but last night I actually did ok, only woke up a few times, and was able to get right back to sleep, util the PA (which I forgot to turn off....) started rambling on about arriving in St. Louis about 6 AM, a hour and 20 minutes or so early....Oh well, gave me time to get up, have a cup of coffee and wait for the diner at 6:30. Had a bit of excitement, there's a sight impaired guy on board who has his helper dog with him, who got off to let the dog stretch and take care of his morning business. On the adjacent track was a Horizon fleet train, which blew twice, and started to move.....My new friend got a bit confused, and started after the train, and was tryinng to flag it....could have been bad, so I tore out the room, and downstairs. . He was pretty upset, until we explained it was the wrong train. Ended up havinng breakfast with him and his dog, who was terrific. Tony's been great, though I'm pretty low maintenance, breakfast was good, no french toast but the pancakes and sausage were not bad at all. Headed to the SSL to watch St Louis go by, and now we're starting to pick up speed in Illinois. Time to get a little work done!

Took a nap after breakfast but the crew didn't, the train continued to be early all morning and into the afternoon. Wasn't really hungry for lunch but wanted to try the burger so I went anyway. It was surprisingly good. Spent the rest of the day looking out the window and at the iPad. Got some work done but just wasn't really into it. Hit the SSL for a while, but Mr Mullet who boarded in Ft Worth with his slingshot was regaling the car with his exploits of prison, (which he apparently usually avoids due to being declared mentally incompetent) and his explanation of top secret military hardware he know all about. Less surprising than him talking all this nonsense, was his table was full of like minded folks who were in rapt attention. It takes all kinds I guess. So, I kept to my roomette for the most part. Got into CHi about a half hour early hanging out in the met lounge. Contrary to the many posts on the subject, the desk clerk (dragons I think you call them?) we're happy and helpful and got me right in. 2 hours to kill until 364.

Overall trip on the Eagle was great, attendants were good, train was on time after a late start in TX, food was ok, and I actually slept pretty well this time. Had we been on time into STL, I probably would have gotten another hour of sleep but we were way early, and they thought it was a good idea to tack on bout it for 10 minutes over the PA at 0600....actually, I guess that was my only complaint other than some of the unique persons who were on board with us. Really wish all trains had PPC's or equivilant. (I know, i know, not all LD coach pax are problems and not all sleeper pax are fine upstanding citizens...but in this case that's how it worked out...)

Ready to do my last leg, and get to the hotel tonight. All that sitting around made me tired...am starting to think our planned OKC-MIA trip might b a bit much, had a good time but think 3 nights and 4 days may be more than I want to do....might change for a round trip OKC-CHI instead, we'll see....

Made it. Showed up at Gate D for the train, and, lo and behold, there's Mr. Mullet in all his rambunctiousness. Apparently his stay in Chicago wasn't going well, when I arrived at the gate he was loudly discussing what he would do to the next cop who harrassed him. They apparently had already confiscated his knife, which was very distressing to him, as "he needs his protection"....Figured I'd sit back and watch the show, and sure enough the cops were called over by another pax, and he got to meet them again. From what I heard, he was given a last warning, if they had to come back, he wasn't going to be allowed to board. He took off for the restroom, and I didn't see him again, don't know if he missed the train, was in another car, or what, but I was glad to be rid of him for sure....funny how 1 person can sour the whole thing.....

In any event, left Chicago on time, but immediately started losing time, and ended up arriving in KAL about 30 minutes or so late. Had to call for a taxi, they all got taken before I could make it out there, but mine showed up soon enough, and took me to the airport for the rental car. Settled in to the hotel, glad to be here, but also glad I made the trip. Will do it again, but I think 1 maybe 2 nights in a row is about all the fun I can handle in one sitting, guess I'm not the pro you all are!

The Good:

OBS team on all 3 trains were great. Only had limited interaction with the OBS folks on the HF and BW but what I did, was good. I didn't get the pleasure of meeting "Miss Molly" on the TE, byt Lucious and his team did great. Tony the SCA was always happy, and always moving, that guy stayed busy. Didn't get the names of the guys who were hanging out in the SSL downstairs right before closing, but they were good to talk to also, and were always in a good mood. That was a nice change from past experience, and some of the things I had read here. The Chicago Met lounge folks were good too, no problems encountered or seen.

Caught it just at the tip of the fall color change, between STL and KAL, the leaves were really starting to turn, especially between CHI and KAL through the Dunes national park. That was nice.

Timeliness was good, a little late into KAL, but not by enough to sour the mood.

Food was ok. Not what I'd eat if I wasn't a captive audience, but certainly not bad. I was warned off by some others in the car, on the crab cakes, but the steak wasn't anything to write home about either, probably should have tried something new. I DID like the Cross Country Cafe, the table layout seems to have more room, I am not super huge, but the regular diners always feel cramped to me. Also enjoyed that they had Sierra Nevada Pale Ale on board, a nice touch, I like a good beer.

Roomette was comforatable for 1. I think it would be cramped with two (doable, but cramped) I used the top bunk, so if I got up at night I could use the seats/table, but the big bonus was the double mattress up top when just making the one up. That made a difference, from my last trip where I used the lower only between CVS and ATL earlier this year.

The Bad:

Really, not much to say here. Was actually satisfied, and would do it again-Much better than some of my past experiences. Only real thing I didn't care for beyond some of the persons on the train and in the station, was the boarding process and the 0600 PA announcements. Really would have liked to sleep in a little longer-Kinda peeved they woke me up to tell me we would be sitting in STL for an hour +......That would have been good sleeping! As to boarding, the mass gaggle at the boarding gate in CHI was a mess, and the train wasn't even close to 1/4th full....I remember last time I took that train, it WAS full, and was much worse, but the boarding area just gets too crowded in my opinion even for light train loads. Would have booked Business class if it were available to avoid some of that, but it was sold out at booking and I never saw it open up.

The Ugly:

Mr. Mullet. Enough said.
