EUGENE, Ore. - An Amtrak passenger locked himself in a restroom and started a fire in a sleeper car on Friday. Police said that he was later detained and taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Now I have seen my fair share of things happen in coach... Drunks, fights, people throwing things out the window on the door... Smoking various things... But now migrating to the sleepers! No wonder it isn't "first class" anymore!

But more seriously, at least no one was seriously injured, equipment totaled, and the train was not severely delayed.

Why was he charged with 23 counts of arson?

I guess the guy really needs some help.

There were 23 people on that particular sleeping car, i.e. 23 potential victims in the eyes of the law. I mean, you could by

extension argue that everyone on the train was a potential victim, but the difference between 23 counts and (let's say) 150

counts is probably immaterial in this case.
