The West Australian state government announced plans to build a direct, underground rail line to the airport out of the branch of the existing Midland commuter rail line. Perth Station (the central rail station) and the central business district will be connected to the airport in 20 minutes travel time and as a one-seat ride. Services are planned to operate every 10 minutes during peak periods and every 15 minutes during the off-peak period. The airport link will provide a connection to Perth's eastern suburbs at the same time. The current cost estimate for the 10.5 km (approx. 6.5 mi) of new track and 3 new stations is AU$2.2 billion (approx. US$2 billion) while the transport minister explained the true cost won't be known for some time. Many might think it is encouraging to hear that there is this another large investment into rail and into a future, convenient rail connection between an airport/surrounding boroughs and a central station/downtown (aka central business district).
