I've ridden Amtrak a few time from NJ to DC, and from NJ to Baltimore, and the rides were good experiences. Now I'd like to look into making a real traveling vacation out of it. I live in NJ, and need to be in Atlanta from September 19-21. I needed to use up some vacation time, so a scheduled off for Sept 15-26, and haven't decided what I'm going to do with the time yet.

It looks like if I rode Amtrak's Crescent, I could stop in Charlotte for a day or more. I could obviously stop in DC, and I'm not sure where else. Do any experienced east coast riders have any suggestions? Coastal stops down south would have been nice, but it doesn't look like I can do that on the only Atlanta line. Historical areas and photo-worthy places would be great, though.

If you are planning on traveling to Atlanta in September, I think you should plan to make reservations ASAP (if not sooner). You not only will get a lower price/fare, but also that you may find that there are no seats available. When I was checking for a seat from Atlanta to Washington a day in October, I found that the train was sold out!
