I recently joined the Amatrak Rewards program and have accumlated some points by shopping, as well as just bought points with the bonus points offer.

My question is: when do these points expire? I am planning on using the points on Amtrak travel early next year.

I read that if you have the Amtrak Mastercard, the points do not expire but I would like to hold out to see if they offer a better deal than the 12,000 bonus points as I know someone who got over 30,000 bonus points last year about this time.

If I get Mastercard later this year, will all my points that I have accumlated up to that point be included in the no expiration deal?

I think you need to do at least one trip within 3 years to keep the points active. You are right about the card, then they won't expire.

I got 32,000 points a couple of years ago with the new card, well worth waiting a while for I'd say. Unless you have a lot of expenditures coming up immediately to earn you a lot of points...

Ok. Thanks. Thinking maybe a little weekend trip to NY might be coming up then!

And once you take that one trip every 3 years, ALL your points are extended for another 3 years, and then after your next trip, ALL your points are extended for another 3 years!

And as said, If you have the AGR MasterCard your AGR points never expire - plus you get a 5% rebate of points on any AGR redemption! :)
