My dad is going to be taking a short trip in a couple of days. There is a station that sells tickets the next town over so we can either drive over there or just take care of it on the train at our local station.

A couple of months ago I paid on the train I didn't have my AGR number with me when I was making the reservation and had to send in the receipt by mail to get the points and then since it was a manual entry I had to call them up to show them what promotions that were supposed to apply.

If he tells them his AGR number while making the reservation and takes care of it when he gets on at the unstaffed local station is it going to be a hassle to get the points? Would they automatically post on his account since the information was already on the reservation?

I just referred him for his new AGR account so I want to make sure that he gets his points and I get mine as well.

I'm not sure of the procedures about boarding at un-staffed stations and buying onboard, but I would think that if you made a reservation and attached the AGR number to the reservation, it might work. But you may have to call AGR later anyway. If at all possible, if you had an actual ticket (you said "in the next town" but I don't know if that is 10 miles or 100 miles away), it would be a lot easier.

I referred someone, and he travelled 2/3/09 - and I think it posted to both his account and to mine by 2/14/09! He had an actual ticket.

I was told by Amtrak that this would work, provided the AGR number was attached to the reservation when it was made (before he boards). Whether this works in practice, I'm not sure.
