Okay, if I purchase a ticket from Lamy to Kansas City and use AGR to go Kansas City to St. Louis, can I make it where the connection is guaranteed?

I realize there is a big layover in Kansas City, but if something did happen, I would want to know Amtrak would be on the hook with a guaranteed connection.

Just call Amtrak, and have them LINK the two reservations, it should be fine.......

So simply linking them makes them a guaranteed connection?

I believe that if the can link them together, AND they meet the requirements, it will be confirmed as a guaranteed connection. (If one train is scheduled to arrive at 9:19 and the next is scheduled to depart at 9:30, I doubt they will guarantee that.)

GML did just that on his recent trip. His first portion was paid, and the 2nd portion was an AGR award. But because he linked the 2, he got the reroute!

Yup, I have done that in the past, and Amtrak even put me up in a hotel in Chicago due to a missed connection. West Coast to Chicago was on AGR, Chicago to NY was paid ticket.

I am confused. If you were trying to make a connection that means that you were not taking a stopover in Chicago. So why didn't you have your AGR ticket from the west coast to Toledo and pay cash from there?
