I read some time ago that there was a plan (by whom, I don't know) to end service between LA and New Orleans. Is that likely to happen?

No, there isn't any plan to end Amtrak service between L.A. and New Orleans via the Sunset Limited. There have been discussions of restructuring the Sunset route (i.e. breaking it into two separate, connecting trains in an attempt to keep it running on time more often) but I don't believe anything has actually been done/arranged yet in this regard.
