I was headed to Dallas for a conference and got into town early so I could do a bit of train riding. I was not sure I could make it in time to catch the Texas Eagle from Dallas to Fort Worth so I did not buy tickets. Figured I could buy them if I got there in time.
I boarded DART Red Line light rail at LBJ Station and headed downtown. As soon as the train was making the curve to head into Union Station, #21 Texas Eagle was pulling out. It actually had two locomotives on it. So I missed it.
A Trinity Railway Express (TRE) train was sitting in Union Station and it was one of the old Budd RDC sets and since I had not gotten to ride one of those in many years, I bought a ticket and boarded the train. We sat for about 20 minutes and then pulled out. Those RDC really have some pick up and go. They get up to speed real quick. I never figured out if they were running the power on all three RDC or if they were just running it on one. When we passed the TRE yard, I saw they have at least 4 three car sets of RDC’s.
We pulled in the Fort Worth about an hour after departure. #21 was already there sitting along with the Heartland Flyer which was a ways down the track. I did notice #21 no longer had two locos so they must have been brining down a protect unit or a replacement for the the HF. It was a long way off but it looked like they were putting on the HF. The normal loco that is being run on biodiesel was sitting up near the station. Not sure if they were having a problem with it, but it was not being used.
After grabbing a couple of hot dogs from a vendor, the eastbound TRE train pulled in. It was the same set of RDC’s. It was another hour back to Dallas where I hopped back on the red line back to LBJ station.
