I just finished watching couple videos on British Rail and read couple articles regarding Korail trying to upgrade train food because of the complaints from consumers. Not sure about the rest of the world, but it seems that not just Amtrak dinning car but railroad food in general is considered over priced and not so good. During British Rail days, the "British Rail Sandwich" was the butt of all jokes of everything that can go wrong according to the video. Is railroad food in general considered unpleasant? (NOT including Orient Express, The Blue Train etc.)

Well the food on the Canadian is pretty darn good as are the Private "Cruise Trains!!" I haven't been on Deluxe Trains like the Blue Train in South Africa but suppilosedly its darn good if pricey!?? Generally it seems to be true that @ best Train food is airline quality @ high prices!

Anyone else here tried out the food on Chinese LD trains? Ugh, even the milk doesn't taste like milk. Yeah, I think most trains around the world have overpriced, bad food.

Very, very seldom have I been served a meal on Amtrak that I considered bad - maybe once, honestly. And I customarily eat all the food offered to me. 0ver-priced is so subjective as to be beyond discussion. I'm appalled at what some folks are totally willing to pay for some things.

I'm very apprehensive about a rumor that meals will soon not be included in sleeper fare. That just might be the end of LD trips for me.

Quite honestly, I really enjoyed the food on our trip on the Sunset Limited. Other than the terrible salad and the oversized salad dressings which a party of four can use one and still have plenty left over, the main dish for all three meals were good. Even the Amburger that many talk crap about was quite good. I really hope that the whole meals not being part of the sleeper fare this is not true, next thing you know, you buy a business class or a first class ticket on an airline and they are going to have Buy on Board. Grrrrr :angry2:

Have to agree with Jim Hudson on the "cruise trains", if he is refering to the private cars attached to the Alaska RR....

I rode the Princess cars years ago, and the food was excellent. I enjoyed breakfast and lunch enroute from Anchorage to Denali National Park, and the next day, dinner from the Park on up to Fairbanks.

I am not certain if it's true, but have heard that the cruiselines rotate cook's and waiter's off their Alaskan cruise ship's for this service...Either way, the food and service are superb! :)

Been more than a decade, but used to eat all the time in the dining car on DB's intercity trains, remember it as being very good. But then again, so was the beer, so, I may be mistaken....

Haha! That's apparently what they do on China Railways. Go into the diner at dinnertime and you'll see a bunch of drunk guys going to vestibule with cigarettes. In China people smoke in the vestibules all the time, but it still spreads into the cabin. So I end up riding on the old Type 22 trains with no air-conditioning and open windows. Much better if you don't have more affluent passengers smoking around on the HSR. Not too bad if you get a sleeper. :)

I have seen images of food on Indian Rail and I find it looking more appetizing than the stuff I have seen through pictures being served on China Rail's dining cars. Not too sure about sanitation wise on Indian Rail but those curry, rice and bread do look delicious! I think I would risk Delhi Belly. :)

I've had one bad meal on Amtrak, and that was in early 2006. I've had a few mediocre meals as well. VIA has been almost universally awesome...but that's the extent of my experience.
