This month (June 2011) we had a quick and very pleasant trip on Amtrak from Boston to Mystic, CT. The Northeast Regionals were on time, clean, friendly, and comfortable. The scenery along the CT coast is some of the best in New England- indeed some of the best on the Northeast Corridor, in our opinion.

Mystic is an easy stop for an overnight with motels and restaurants within walking distance of the station. There is a big public waterfront park where you can sit and watch the boats and the drawbridge. There are art galleries and shops for browsing.

Mystic has a few major attractions- the Mystic Seaport and the Mystic Aquarium. These are a taxi ride away from downtown and do have a fee.

We also took Amtrak in late March from Boston to Fort Lauderdale. We took the Northeast Regional to NYPenn. We did not get sleepers this time. The Silver Meteor was on time and we were as comfortable as possible. The attendants on this train were great- helpful and humorous. Food very good- especially the chicken and desserts. We returned to Boston 2 weeks later, on the Silver Meteor via Washington DC, as we prefer this station to NYPenn. We opted for Business Class on the Northeast Regionals, which gave us more foot room and better seats- well worth the extra for a LD trip.
