Myself and my better half are considering a national USA rail pass trip (we're Irish), and there's one thing that I'm not clear on. If we choose to buy a roomette upgrade do we pay more than a single passanger would for that same sleeper upgrade, given that we'll likely eat twice the number of meals?

Also, has anyone got a favorite 'off the beaten track' amtrak destination (west coast, northern border, midwest) that they would recommend visiting? We'll probably travel for a month, but with a week off the train in San Diego.

I don't know if this is "off the beaten path" enough, but check out Glenwood Springs Colorado. Its on the California Zephyr Amtrak route. Mountain town of about 8,000. Its where Doc Holiday died. (American Cowboy) Its also where the "Teddy Bear" was supposedly invented. President Theodore Roosevelt was bummed out that he hadn't got a bear during a hunting trip so some female employees of a hotel he was residing at sewed a "Teddy" Bear and gave it to him. There's also a really cool swimming pool there called the "Hot Springs Pool and Spa". Its a spring fed natural pool with healing waters in it. I don't like to swim but I enjoyed it. www.glenwoodchamber.com. is a good source of info. Also, a friend of mine just took the Empire Builder (northern route for Amtrak that goes east and west from Chicago to Seattle) and theres a place called the Izaak Walton Inn around Essex MT. (near or in Glacier National Park) cool lil' inn out in the middle of nowhere.

No, you pay the same amount to upgrade to a roomette, regardless of whether you put one person into the room or two.

So if you want to get a roomette, book it sooner rather than later to avoid price increases as the train sells out.

If you want to be frugal, you can ask the conductor in train to ask for upgrade. You'll get better chance during Amtrak off-season such as spring (except for spring break) or in the fall. If you're going in the high demand season, try for mid-week trip.

I've never stopped there period, much less in the winter. But I do know that cross-country skiing is very big there in the winter. I believe that you can also try snowshoeing too.
