Is there a way to figure out which roometts or bedrooms face the desired side for optimal scenery, for example on the Coast Starlight going south from seattle the right side. The Empire Builder the left side is desirable. If I go to the sightseer Lounge, all seats have been taken and some people "save seats" for others friends or family that "are coming in Just a few minutes" This is frustratung for single guy traveling alone. My next trip is March 5th on the Empire Builder and the Lake Shore Limited to NYC. (BTW, the Viewliner roometts are well designed and 100% bettter than the superliner roomeets.) I am returning on The Cardinal which is considerable many hours more than the Lake Shore but its one of a few Amtrak routes I have not yet had a chance to ride. Brentrain

There is no way to tell which side your room will be on. However, if you get a bedroom, you can see out both sides since the hallway has windows in it as well.

Also - I like the Superliner roomettes much better since there is no toilet in the room. I don't like the idea of sleeping next to a toilet.

You prefer getting dressed down the hall to a public toilet late at night compared to sleeping next to a door with a toilet and shower? :eek:hboy:

Yes, I do prefer that. Something about having a toilet next to a bed just doesn't sit well with me (think: bad aim). If I'm on the train for more than one night, I will splurge for a bedroom.

Most experienced railfans use the sitting method.Half the population already does.It works.

When I travel solo in a Viewliner roomette not only do I use the "experienced railfans" method, I also sleep in the upper berth and never convert the seats into the lower berth. This eliminates  sleeping close to the commode.

A sleeper can be attached in either direction, so there is no way of knowing if you are on the "right" side or "left" side until you board! In fact, on at least one of my trips, one sleeper had bedrooms first while the other sleeper had roomettes first. So one sleeper had even numbered rooms on the "right" side, and the other had even numbered rooms on the "left" side!

Bingo. Toilet in room, as designed, is disgusting. I'd much rather dress, and go down the hall........

There's no way to know the car direction ahead of time. But if you're in a sleeper on the Starlight, what difference does it make? You've got the PPC (ahem, maybe a CCC <_< ) or the Sightseer Lounger to choose from. If you want to see the scenery, get to one of those cars EARLIER. You can see out both sides very well. If you have an immediate need for sleep, use your sleeper room. :eek:hboy: You won't be interested in looking out the window then. But you don't have to spend all your time in the sleeper room. Get to the good cars EARLIER.
