I have a friend that moved to Key West but returns a couple times each year to Ohio. When he returns to Key West, he enjoys using the Capitol Limited and the Silver Meteor for his trip to Miami departing from Cleveland. I travel with him on the Capitol Limited phase of the trip. There is about a three and a half hour turnaround in DC for the return to Cleveland on the CL. The past year made that trip a tad risky with the possibility of a bustitution from Pittsburgh but it never happened.

I have also taken several "day trips" from Cleveland to Chicago on either the CL or LSL over the years. My wife has even taken two of those although she never understands my penchant for LD train travel without staying in any city for a few days.

I have often thought about taking a SEA/PDX/SPK/SEA single day trip. The only downside is getting up & changing roomettes in the middle of the night.

I've never done a pure train cruise on an intercity train; I can never quite justify the price, so I always coordinate the trip with some reason to actually be at the far end. I've done "joyride" back-and-forth train trips on the local urban and commuter rail systems in pretty much every city I've ever visited, however -- the prices usually make for a really cheap and fun tour.

I've done the long way to Chicago where I've driven to Kansas City to board the Westbound Chief to LAX, cut right over to the Starlight to PDX and straight away onto the Builder to Chicago. Of course it was entertaining as could be on the Chief when folks asked where I was going only to be met with explanations I was on the wrong train headed the wrong way; when I explained the routing many shook their heads and fled

You should have been in Philly this weekend. There were a bunch of crazy people joyriding the trains. :D

Someone isn't a member of Amtrak Guest Rewards....... Most of the members of AU do it on a frequent occasion. I'll go from Philadelphia to Washington to earn points.

My "stupid roomette tricks" probably qualify. RVR-NYP-RVR is doable in a single day if I take the Meteor up and back; if worse comes to worse and there are delays, I can easily bail at NWK, and considering that these are largely last-minute trips, I could see reworking a "return trip" reservation to PHL if it became necessary. I've generally found this to be far, far more comfortable (to say nothing of the convenience of not changing at WAS) than taking the Acela.
